Frequently asked questions

What is an MCS umbrella scheme?

An MCS umbrella scheme allows installers to work on low-carbon heating systems without needing their own MCS certification. By operating under an approved provider such as Alto Energy, you can access MCS-compliant system designs, government funding like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and full technical backup -all without the administrative burden.

This route is ideal for heating engineers and plumbers who are new to air source or ground source heat pumps, or those who want to avoid the cost and time involved in becoming accredi

Who can Join MCS umbrella scheme?

This scheme is best suited to professionals who want to install heat pumps but do not want to hold their own MCS certification. Whether you’re just getting started or simply want to focus on the installs while we manage the compliance, we can support you.

We work with:

  • Independent installers and sole traders

  • Small-to-medium plumbing and heating firms

  • Engineers working on domestic retrofit or new build projects

Is it worth being MCS registered?

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the recognised quality mark for heat pump installations in the UK. It’s also the route to unlocking government support, including schemes like the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and can help with Building Control compliance.

For plumbers or businesses where heat pumps are not yet the main focus, gaining full MCS certification can be a big commitment in terms of time and ongoing responsibility.

How does an umbrella scheme work?

When you join our umbrella scheme, you carry out the installation while we handle the design, supply, commissioning, compliance, and all the necessary paperwork. The installation will be MCS-accredited and, where eligible, your customers can benefit from grants such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. You’ll also have ongoing support from our Technical team throughout the process.
